Creating and Editing a Theme

Can I create my own theme?
You can create a theme by clicking on the “Create” tab on the top of the Themes Page. When you click “Create” you will then add all of your theme settings first.  Once you add your settings and click "Save Theme," you will then be taken to our custom CSS editor. Here you can edit your css, page template, post template and comment display.

What are the different tabs in the theme editor?
The tab are Info, CSS, Page, Comment, and Post

  • Info: This shows the theme name, description, thumbnail, and shared settings.
  • CSS: All of your CSS additions or edits can be done here.
  • Page: Here is where you can edit the page template. This is where you can add third party analytics code, meta tags, etc.
  • Comment: Here is where you can find the template for how comments are displayed.
  • Post: This is where the individual post template is. Here you can change how your content is being displayed.


How do I upload an image for my templates (advanced)?
To upload an image, click on the yellow icon next to the Post tab. Here you can upload your image like you would for a post. Once you have it selected, instead of seeing the image, you will see a popup with the image url. You can then cut/paste this into your theme templates.

Can I customize one of the featured themes?
You can do basic customizations by setting themes that are marked Customizable. If you'd like to customize themes that are not marked customizable, you will first need to make your own copy. Once you do, you can then "Edit" it as you see fit.

None of the themes have a “Edit” link on them, what do I do?
In order to customize a theme, you need to have one that belongs to you. You can do this by creating a new theme, or copying an existing one. To copy a theme click on the "Copy" link in the theme information.

Can I share my theme with other users?
You can share your theme with other users, just make sure that the “Share Theme” box is checked when you save the theme. Sharing your theme means that others will be able to copy it.

I don’t want other users to have access to my theme. Can I stop others from using it?
You can decide to stop allowing others to use your theme by unchecking the “Share Theme” box on the Theme Edit page.

How can I make my theme a featured theme?

Select and Customize a Theme

How do I change my theme?
You can change your layout by clicking on the “Themes” link in your site dropdown menu. You will then choose your desired theme and click “Set” to start using that theme.

What are the different tabs on the theme page?
The tabs are Active, Featured, Shared, Yours, and Create.

  • Active shows you what them you're currently using.
  • Featured showcases themes that we’ve selected. These themes will never be deleted and will always be shared.
  • Shared are themes that other onSugar members have created and shared. You must copy these before you can use them.
  • Yours are themes that you’ve created or copied.
  • The Create tab will allow you to make a theme from scratch.

 

Can I customize my theme?
Many of our themes have the ability for basic customization (colors, fonts, etc.). When selecting a theme, find one that has the "Customizable" gray bar across the image.

How do I customize my theme?
Once you've selected a customizable theme, click "Set." Once you do, you will see color and font selectors on the left hand side. Note: Each customizable theme has different options. Some allow you to change everything, while others only allow you to add headers and change colors. The different options will appear in the left hand side of the customizable theme. Be sure to hit "Save" in order to have your changes stick.

Who can comment?
As default, anyone with an onSugar account can leave a comment on your site. However, if you turn on anonymous comments, anyone can leave a comment on your site.

How do I turn anonymous comments on?
To turn on anonymous comments, go to “Site Settings” in your drop down menu. Scroll down to the bottom and locate the checkbox for “Allow anonymous comments”. Make sure this box is checked. If it is checked, then anyone can leave comments on your site.

Can I turn anonymous comments off later?
You can turn them off at anytime (they are off by default). To do so, simply make sure the “Allow anonymous comments” box is unchecked.

Can I unpublish comments?
Any site editor or owner can unpublish comments on their site. They will stay on the page for your reference, but they will be invisible to the outside world. You can republish them at any time.

Are your comments filtered?
No, our comments are not filtered. It is up to the site owner to unpublish comments they do not like. If you have a problem with commenters, please contact us at help@onsugar.com.


Publishing Times

What are the publishing options?
The publishing choices are publish now, save as draft, and publish on.

What is “Publish Now”?
Choosing publish now will publish the post immediately.

What is “Save As Draft”?
You can can begin a post and save it for later by choosing the “Save As Draft” option. You can get back to it by clicking on “Posts & Drafts” in the dropdown menu under your site name.

What is Publish On?
With onSugar, you have the ability to schedule posts for a future or past date. Selecting “Publish On” will pop open a box where you can set the date and time when your story will publish. Don’t forget that it’s in military time.

What is the default publishing option?
The posts are defaulted to publish now.

I scheduled my post, but it didn’t appear on my homepage. What happened?
Is it still scheduled in your drafts? If it is then be sure to check that you have the correct date and time set. If you’re still having problems, contact us at help@onsugar.com.

All of my posts are showing up earlier/later than I expected. What’s going on?
Please keep in mind that our scheduling is set on Pacific Time. When setting the timer, be sure to offset accordingly.


Followers

What are followers?
Followers are fellow onSugar members who have chosen to receive updates whenever you post to your site.

How do I follow someone’s site?
You can follow someone’s site by clicking the “Start/Stop following this site” link located on the blog’s Follower widget. If the site does not use the Follower widget, you can choose to follow the site by clicking the link in the top gray navigation bar. Alternatively, you can follow all sites from a user by clicking “Follow My Sites” on the top of their profile page.

How do I see who is following my site?
On your site dropdown menu, click on the “Followers” link to view a list of followers for your site. Your Profile Page also has a section called “People That Follow My Sites” which shows all users who are currently following your sites.

What does Follower Feed mean?
A Follower Feed is the list on your onSugar homepage that posts updates of all the sites you follow.

Why am I getting emails from the sites I follow?
Once you follow a site, you are automatically subscribed to email notifications. To change this and other notifications click on the "Notifications" tab when editing your profile. Learn more about changing your notifications.


Writers and Editors

Can I add another writer to my site?
You bet. You can add as many writers and editors as you’d like.

How do I add another writer?
On your site dropdown menu, click on the “Writers” link. Once there, click on the “Invite” tab. To add additional writers fill in the “To” field with email addresses or onSugar usernames. Separate each one with a comma. Next write them a quick message and click “Invite.” Your invitees will have writer access the next time they log in.

What’s the difference between site editors and writers?
Site editors can access and change all the site information. This incudes all posts, site settings, invitations, themes, widgets, pages, scheduling, etc. Site writers can only create, publish, and edit their own posts.

How do I make someone an editor?
Once someone is a writer for your site, you can promote them to editor by clicking the “Promote to Editor” link under their name on the Writers page. Alternatively, you can make an editor a writer by clicking the “Demote to Writer” link.

How do I remove a writer/editor from my site?
To remove a writer or editor from your site, click the “Remove” link under their name on the Writers page.


Log In

How do I log in?
Once you have an onSugar account, click the “Log In” button in the top right corner of the onSugar homepage. You will be directed to a screen where you enter your username and password. Alternatively, if you are on any OnSugar site, you can click the Login link in the top gray navigation bar.

What happens if I forget my password?
Don’t worry. If you’ve forgotten your password we can email you the information. Just click the “forgot password” link on the Log In page, or drop us a line at help@onsugar.com.

What happens if I forget my username?
If you’ve forgotten your username, just contact us at help@onsugar.com. Be sure to include the email address you signed up with.

Help, I can’t log in!

Profile and Account Information

How do I edit my profile?
Once logged in, you can edit your profile by opening your account’s dropdown menu at the top left corner of the screen. You will access your profile info by clicking the “Edit Profile” option. Alternatively, if you’re on your profile page, you can click the “Edit Profile” button above your About Me section.

How do I change the email address associated with my onSugar account?
You can change your email address on the Edit Profile page. Once there, click the “Account” tab at the top of the page. This will take you to a page where you change your email and password. Be sure to click “Save” when your changes are in place.

How do I change my user icon?
When you’re on your Edit Profile page, you can add or change your user icon by  uploading a picture from your computer. Search for a picture on your hard drive by clicking the “Browse…” button. Locate the image you want to use, and once it is uploaded be sure to hit the “Save” button at the bottom of the Edit Profile page.

How do I change my password?
To change your password, access your Edit Profile page. Once there click the “Account” tab at the top of the page. This will take you to a page where you change your email and password. Be sure to click “Save” when your changes are in place.

How do I cancel my account?
If you’d like to cancel your account, please contact us at help@onsugar.com.

Will I lose all of my content if I cancel?
Canceling your account will delete all of your content and onsugar.com URLs. You will not be able to access any of your account information. Doing so will also cancel your TeamSugar and ShopStyle accounts.

How do I change my username?

How do I create an account?
To create an account, click the “Get Started!” button on the onSugar homepage (or on this one). If you already have an account with TeamSugar or ShopStyle, you will be able to use the same username and password to log in to onSugar.

Why is there a math question on the Create an Account page?
The math problem is there to make sure you’re an actual person. At this time we do not allow robots to sign up for accounts. Although, I’m fairly certain any decent robot would be able to answer the question correctly.
